Transformer Maintenance Basics

Why distribution transformers need maintenance and what preventive maintenance generally covers.

A distribution transformer is built to run for years, but regular maintenance keeps it reliable and reduces the risk of unplanned downtime. Maintenance is usually a mix of scheduled (preventive) checks and corrective work when an issue is found.

What it generally covers

Typical activities include visual inspection, checking connections and accessories, condition assessment and testing. The right schedule depends on the specific transformer, its loading and the site conditions.

Signs that a transformer needs attention

Unusual noise, rising temperature, oil leaks, discoloured or cracked bushings and changes in the readings from the gauges are all reasons to have a transformer inspected. Do not wait for a failure: planned maintenance during a scheduled shutdown is far less disruptive than an unplanned outage.
