What is a Busduct?
What busduct (bus trunking) is and when it is used instead of cables.
A busduct, also called bus trunking, is an enclosed system of conductors used to carry large currents between electrical equipment. It is a compact, reliable alternative to running many large cables in parallel.
When it is used
Busduct is common where high currents need to travel between a transformer, main panel and distribution points, such as in high-rise buildings, large plants and data centres. Tap-off boxes allow power to be drawn at points along the run.
Planning a busduct run
Start with the current to be carried and the route: length, bends and changes of level all matter. Decide where tap-off units are needed along the way, and whether copper or aluminium conductors suit the project. Copper is generally more compact for a given current, while aluminium is lighter and often less costly. Joints are critical points, so installation quality and correct tightening matter as much as the product itself.
