What is a VFD Panel?

A simple explanation of Variable Frequency Drive panels and where they save energy.

A VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) panel houses a drive that controls the speed and torque of an electric motor by varying the frequency and voltage supplied to it.

Why use one

Running a motor at exactly the speed a process needs, instead of full speed all the time, improves control and can significantly reduce energy use on variable loads such as pumps and fans. A VFD also provides a soft start, reducing mechanical and electrical stress.

Points to consider

A drive should be matched to the motor and the load, not just to the motor's power rating, because pumps and fans make very different demands from conveyors or crushers. Heat from the drive must be removed, the length of cable between drive and motor can affect performance, and some installations need a bypass so that the motor can run directly if the drive is out of service.
